  • Statistics in Spanish Football

    2010-12-08T20:39:32Z

There's a problem of correlation of statistics to the overall performance of the team itself, that stands on the system of play. The only two completely objective and non-correlated stats that you can search and cross-reference are goal scoring and goal avoidance...if you have a highly offensive system, you look for highly efficient scorers (with a good scoring ratio), and on the defensive side you look for defensive players who their teams receive fewer goals, and goalkeepers with many saves. In a 11 player squad that pretty much covers 4 or 5 players, because the mid field contribution is quite "intangible" because through there passes the style (e.g. FC Barcelona vs Real Madrid)...whereas you can find other players, talented mid-fielders pretty much bloom.

I totally agree with you that comparing American sports with Football is nonsense...even MLB do not compare (look at the last 10 World Champions, and see the diversity that you don't see in football). Even more, MLB have a draft that works well (without the media attention of the NFL's and NBA) and has drafted great players like Alex Rodriguez, Kerry Woods, Julio Borbon, and many others.

    Congrats! Good piece overall.

  • Shirt Sponsorship ~ How does Spain compare?

    2010-11-15T14:57:35Z

I don't think Barça will change, at least for the mid-term...they gain more brand equity and public awareness (and godwill) by their current UNICEF deal. If it were to be measured, they will for sure overcome the fee they pay UNICEF with marginal revenues from godwill and Worldwide awareness.

The main problem in Spain is that with limited TV exposure (for most of the teams) and with low merchandise culture, a shirt deal doesn't make much sense for great sponsors.

    Great piece!

    BEst regards,
